Descriptions
What is ovarian cyst?
An ovarian cyst is a sac filled with fluid or semisolid material that forms on or within one or both of the ovaries. The ovaries are small organs in the pelvis that produce eggs and hormones.
Ovarian cysts are common, especially in women of childbearing age. Most ovarian cysts are harmless and go away on their own within a few months. However, some cysts can cause pain, bleeding, and other problems. Rarely, ovarian cysts can be cancerous.
Some causes of ovarian cyst:
- Ovulation: Small cysts called follicles develop on the ovaries each month during the menstrual cycle. These cysts usually burst and release an egg, but sometimes they don't burst and continue to grow. This can lead to a functional cyst.
- Hormonal imbalances: Certain medical conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can cause hormonal imbalances that can lead to ovarian cysts.
- Infections: Infections of the reproductive system can also cause ovarian cysts.
- Endometriosis: Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. This can also lead to ovarian cysts.
- Cancer: In rare cases, ovarian cysts can be caused by cancer.
Symptoms of ovarian cyst:
- Pelvic or abdominal pains.
- Menstrual disorders.
- Bloating stomach.
- Pains during sex.
- Difficulty in conceiving.
- Frequent urinating.
- Bleeding.
Complications of ovarian cyst:
- Rupture: A ruptured cyst can cause sudden, severe pain in the pelvis. It can also cause bleeding and infection.
- Torsion: A twisted cyst can cut off the blood supply to the ovary. This can cause pain, swelling, and nausea.
- Cancer: In rare cases, ovarian cysts can be cancerous.
Prevention of ovarian cysts:
There is no sure way to prevent ovarian cysts. However, getting regular pelvic exams can help to identify cysts early, when they are most likely to go away on their own.
