What is vaginal yeast infection?
Vaginal yeast infection is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of a type of fungus called Candida. Candida is a normal part of the body's flora, but it can cause problems if it overgrows. Yeast infections can occur anywhere on the body, but they are most common in the vagina and mouth.
Vaginal yeast infections are very common, affecting up to 75% of women at some point in their lives. They are most common during pregnancy and in women with diabetes. Yeast infections can also be triggered by certain antibiotics, steroids, and other medications.
Symptoms of vagina yeast infection:
- Itching and burning of the vagina and vulva.
- Thick, white vaginal discharge with a cottage cheese appearance.
- Pain or burning during urination or sexual intercourse.
- Redness and swelling of the vulva.
Causes of vaginal yeast infection:
- Antibiotics: Antibiotics can kill the good bacteria in the body, which can allow Candida to overgrow.
- Pregnancy: Pregnancy causes hormonal changes that can make women more susceptible to yeast infections.
- Diabetes: People with diabetes have higher levels of sugar in their blood and urine, which can create a favorable environment for Candida to grow.
- A weakened immune system: People with a weakened immune system, such as those with HIV/AIDS or cancer, are also more likely to develop yeast infections.
Yeast infections can be mistaken for other conditions, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It is also important to get treatment for a yeast infection, as it can lead to more serious complications if left untreated.
How to prevent vaginal yeast infection:
- Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing.
- Keep the genital area clean and dry.
- Avoid using douches or scented soaps.
- Eat a healthy diet that is low in sugar.
- Avoid the use of unnecessary antibiotics.
